How to Do Market Research on eBay

How to Do Market Research on eBay
By Maria Teves
EBay is a great place to do business. Many people think that it's too late to get in on the eBay game. They think that there are too many sellers already making a full-time living on eBay. They think that only the people who got in early, at the beginning stages of eBay have a chance to succeed. But that's just not true. eBay is not a pyramid scheme. eBay is an online auction platform. That's a big difference.
What does this difference mean to you? It means if you haven't started profiting from eBay you can still get started. All it takes is some work combined with the right methods and strategies to build a successful business. One of the most important things to do is to find out what you can sell profitably before you make a big investment in merchandise.
I am talking about market research. Market research is the single most important factor that differentiates successful eBay sellers from the ones who will go broke. That's why I want to share one method of doing market research for your eBay business here.
And it's a very simple to do eBay market research. It's nothing fancy. You don't need to buy any fancy kind of service, you do not need to spend a lot of money, in fact you do not need to spend any money - that's right, it's completely free.
And it is deceptively simple. So simple that you might think: oh, this won't work.
But if you're willing to just actually do it, instead of just doing it in your mind, your fantasy, and hallucinating the results that will come out, you can find it incredibly valuable data about your market.
That is one of the things that always separates successful entrepreneurs from the people who will always work for "the man". Entrepreneurs try things out in the real world. Employees imagine and fantasize scenarios, find ways why they won't work and never undertake anything.

Make Money Selling on eBay - Hammertap Versus Terapeak

Make Money Selling on eBay - Hammertap Versus Terapeak
By Bob B. Hamilton
Hammertap software and Terapeak software are two software programs that are used to help eBay sellers research the most popular selling product, what that product sells for and how competitive sellers are making out in the market. Both of these software programs provide eBay users with tons of statistical information regarding the products sold on eBay and are both quite simple to use. The most difficult aspect of these two software programs is how to decipher the stats and turn them into the best profit available for the seller. In this article I present make money selling on eBay - Hammertap versus Terapeak.
To start down the path to make money selling on eBay, let's first examine Hammertap software. Hammertap software provides users with video tutorials of their product on their website regarding the use of the software. The tutorials will guide the user through each step of the research process and teach the user how to decipher the research and how to put those stats into effect. The video tutorials usually run around one hour at a time but are well worth watching and listening too. You might even want to take some notes.
Other features of Hammertap are its price. Hammertap is currently selling for $19.95 per month, down from roughly $25 per month. Also, Hammertap recently released its web-based software. The first version of Hammertap software was only available as a disc to be installed on a PC. That meant it could not be used on a Mac, Linux or other non-Windows platform. The web-based version means that subscribers to the software can log into the company's website and use the program via their internet browser on any computer. Hammertap also provides its users with an eBay fee calculator tool and a bad bidder blocking tool.

Terapeak, what is it?
Terapeak is eBay's Certified Provider of market research. What this means is that they have access to eBay's vast database of past auction transactions. Information that the average eBay seller is not granted access to. All the average user gets the completed item search which is only for very recent closed auctions. Terapeak's information goes back years and includes the following: auction sales prices, item sell through rate, item titles, item categories. Most eBay sellers do not take advantage of this opportunity instead they rely on completed searches and their own knowledge to make choices about which items to buy and sell and when. With Market Research by Terapeak you have the advantage over the average seller because you have information they don't, information that could prove very valuable. What do I mean? Well let's take a look at what Terapeak can do.
What can Terapeak do for you?

eBay Research - How Do You Know What Will Sell?

eBay Research - How Do You Know What Will Sell?
By Sophie Ryland
Selling on eBay isn't as easy as it once was. Even though the eBay phenomenon now has millions more people looking for items for a bargain price then ever before, that doesn't mean that you can just throw an auction up on eBay and you'll be guaranteed a sale.
For one thing, there are more and more eBay sellers than come on board every day, so the competition has become fierce. Also, the "big boys" have entered the eBay marketplace. Major corporations are now selling their wares on eBay.
So how can you compete with the big boys? Do your research thoroughly. Do keyword searches for products that you're interested in selling. When you come across some intriguing items "watch" these auctions to completion.
Also, do some searches on completed auctions over the past 30 days to see what other eBay sellers have sold their items for. Do some calculations to determine if you can make a decent profit after you've paid for the item in question, the auction listing, and any PayPal fees.
If you can't make a decent profit from the item then find other ones to research. There are so many to choose from.
Analyze these auctions carefully as some eBay sellers are new. This means that low auction bids can be a result of low feedback, poor auction listings, starting the bids too high, among other issues.
You should have an interest or some expertise in the product you want to sell in order to create auction listings that will sell. People need to be assured that you know your stuff.
You may find you have better luck with rare, antique items then you will with newer products. The competition is not as fierce and people will pay more for something that's not as easily accessible.
There is still money to be made on eBay, but you need to be smarter than ever before in order to earn a decent income at it.

Can eBay Research Tools Help You?

Running a successful eBay business can be a tough job. With so many eBay stores there is plenty of competition. So what can you do to assure you make a nice profit? You can do your research. Research will help you out in many ways. It can help you with pricing your product and even picking a product to sell. There is a great deal you can learn from doing research. What listings bring the most customers? What features should you use on your listings, and plenty of information on products and the prices. You can learn about the competition as well.
eBay research is vital to the success of your eBay business, whether you are new to eBay or have had a business for a while. You can keep an eye on the products you are selling. You will be able to know if a product is still popular or if the popularity is fading. If the popularity is fading and there are still a lot of people selling it you may want to find something else to sell for a while. You can learn what price is the best to ask. What price are people willing to pay? Are they buying auction style or the faster fixed price method? These are all things you need to know for your business to be successful. If you know the right price to list your products at you will be able to compete with other sales people on eBay. You want to get the best price possible and with a little research you can see what that price is.
How much competition do you have? If there are a lot of people selling the same product the competition may be too much. You will have to compete with businesses that can offer their product at a lower price than you and if too many people are selling there won't be enough buyers for the product.
Research listing fees and features you can add to your listing. You will be able to see what features seem to work for other sellers. You want to make your listing appealing so it draws customers, but you don't want to spend more than your profit allows. You can make a good judgment call if you do your research.
When you are running an eBay business you tend to be very busy. There is so much that you must do. Finding time to do research isn't easy. It is essential, however. There are eBay research tools that can cut down on the amount of time you spend doing research. The research tools will do all the hard work for you. They conduct the searches for you so all you have to do is read the information that is pulled up. Research tools will even do a hot product search. This is helpful if you prefer to stick with products that are very popular. These tools will tell you the best time to sell your products. There are some products that people will purchase while they are at work, but there are some that people wait to purchase when they get home. Some products are seasonal. eBay tools will tell you when to ask the highest price for them, when they are in season, and if it is something that may sell at other times of the year.
